The consumer information page contains important resources for prospective and current GW students and to assist the GW community in finding important institutional information.
Students are expected to notify the MD Program Office of Financial Aid when an outside award is received. Federal regulations and school policy require that the financial aid award be adjusted when a student receives outside aid. The GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences has set the following policy for revisions caused by the receipt of outside awards:
Armed Forces Scholarships/National Health Service Corps Scholarships/Indian Health Scholarships: These scholarships provide substantial financial support in return for a service commitment. Once such an award is accepted, all GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences scholarship to the student is rescinded. Loans may be obtained only for the difference between the award and the school budget, less the recipient's expected resources.
AmeriCorps Segal Education Awards
The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is a post-service benefit given to individuals who complete a term of national service in approved AmeriCorps programs. Please use "The George Washington University Medical Sch" to search for the School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
National Medical Fellowship (NMF)
To qualify, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen from one of the following underrepresented minority groups as defined by NMF: African American, Mexican American, American Indian and/or mainland Puerto Rican. NMF is a non-profit organization which provides grants-in-aid for first- and second year students judged by NMF to be in need of financial assistance.
National Health Service Corps (NHSC)
The federal government sponsors the National Public Service Corps Scholarship Program. These very competitive awards carry a service commitment after your residency in an underserved area in the United States. The award covers tuition, fees, books, and supplies, plus a stipend for living expenses. Early submission is recommended.
Indian Health Scholarship Program
The IHS Scholarship Program provides qualified American Indian and Alaska Native health professions students an opportunity to establish an educational foundation for each stage of your pre-professional careers. The scholarship program provides financial support in exchange for a minimum two-year service commitment within an Indian health program in your chosen health professional discipline.
Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP)
These scholarships are available to a limited number of applicants. The scholarship provides full payment of direct educational costs (tuition, fees, books, etc.) and a stipend for living expenses. Each carries a service commitment. You may obtain descriptive brochures and applications for these programs by contacting their respective recruiter or recruitment offfice. BE ADVISED:
During the course of the school year, a student may receive additional funding beyond the budgeted amount. If this occurs, any overaward must be repaid. The Office of Financial Aid will return the funds to the highest interest bearing loan.
